As Paul concludes his admonitions to the church at Philippi, he calls them to think appropriately. Paul calls their thinking to be focused on specific characteristics that should define what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Paul here uses characteristics from the broader Greek culture, but applies them to the believers of Philippi and their thinking. Paul has repeatedly challenged the thinking of these believers throughout this letter. He has challenged them to think like Jesus, in humility and selfless service toward one another. Paul wants these believers to understand that real, godly contentment is learned. Believers must learn to be content, but this is learned by right thinking. Right thinking leads to contentment; you cannot and will not be content apart from right thinking. In the New Year ahead, we must think appropriately to truly be content.
Philippians is a wonderful letter of hopeful encouragement for believers who are struggling with their concern about Paul and his current circumstances, struggling with their thinking about several different issues including: assurance, perseverance, the gospel and mission, partnership, fellowship and unity, and joy. Paul offers specific theological foundations for right thinking about engaging one another in the church. This foundation begins with a right understanding of Jesus, who he is and what he came to accomplish. It is also built on a right approach to the gospel and gospel ministry. This church needs to understand the importance of working together for the advance of the gospel in the church and in their community.
