Caregiver Saathi brings to you Conversations with Gentle Warriors! A series of our Facebook LIVE sessions where caregivers share their caregiving journeys, now in a podcast format.
Welcome to the 8th episode of Conversations with Gentle Warriors.
In this episode, we hear from Sonia Suri, and we learn about her journey as a caregiver, her experience with a Caregiver Saathi. Sonia Suri, being the youngest child, was a caregiver to her dad suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and was a companion (Saathi) to her husband who was also a caregiver to his parents.
She talks about the difficulty faced in a household where taking care of your ageing parents was considered the responsibility of children. Sonia also speaks about making tough decisions on the behalf of her family and about the responsibilities that came with caregiving.
“Please reach out for help, don’t be embarrassed if you’re not able to do it and somebody else does it for you”
She stresses on the importance of joining support groups as well as learning about the disease that your loved one is suffering from. Sonia also talks about all the life lessons she learned throughout her journey, and about how she aims to create more awareness of the disease suffered by her dad.
She also shares some of her key learnings from this experience and offers advice for other caregivers who are on their journey.

If this story had an impact on you, please share it with others around you who care for someone and help them share too. It’s difficult for people to share their experiences and listening to this might help people open up and talk more about their experiences as a caregiver.
It is important for caregivers to be heard and understood and sharing one story helps the person to come out of their feeling of loneliness. It helps people lighten their load and relieves them from guilt, anger or anxiety.
