Today’s episode is a two-part episode where I introduce you to our guest Frankie. I met Frankie during their time in high school when I was a teacher.
Frankie, like many other young adults, spent a lot of time in high school trying to figure out who they are and the path they want to go on. Frankie and family moved to a new and small town. Frankie was brought up in a very Christian home. Their knowledge of relationships and how you should behave was very much guided through the Christian lifestyle. Making friends when you have moved into a smaller town later on is difficult.
Frankie had very short relationships in high school. It wasn't until Frankie’s junior/ senior year, Frankie had their first long term relationship. Frankie looked to her Christian upbringing about how relationships should look. Looking back after the relationship, Frankie realized that it wasn’t a healthy relationship.
Frankie joined an underground group at their Christian school to be an ally for queer people during their freshman year. Their sophomore year, something started to click that Frankie wasn’t just an ally. Frankie started to analyze their self and past relationships to figure out who they truly are. Frankie had to untangle past trauma from childhood expectations of relationships, understanding who they are interested in as just friends or who is more of a romantic relationship. Frankie was also trying to balance discovering who they are vs family expectations back at home.
Frankie learned quickly in the underground of a Christian college that the rules set in place weren’t for an all-inclusive student body. It was geared towards heterosexual relationships. Frankie learned ways to use those rules to their advantage. During Frankie’s last year of school, they were the most open they have been about themselves thus far and even openly walked around on campus holding hands in a non-heterosexual relationship.
Join us next week as we continue to hear Frankie share their story about the journey of discovering their true self and their community of people.
