Conviction in a Culture of Compromise (Part 2)

Listen Later

Key Question: How do I live life without compromising my faith?

1. Conviction takes courage (v. 8a)

You will be worn down with pain, but also with pleasure.

It’s important to live modestly.

Your place of work is your place of witness.

2. Conviction involves wisdom (v.8b)

God’s sovereignty and Human responsibility (v. 9).

3. Conviction requires resolve (v. 10-14)

Don’t try to control the outcome.

Do you trust God WILL honour your commitment to him?

Conclusion: The Spirit of God will strengthen and sustain you (v. 15-21)

You need the Spirit of God in you.

You also need the Family of God around you.

Small Group Discussion Questions:

1. Share with your group a time when you almost compromised to sin but did not. What was so tempting about it? What stopped you from compromising?

2. Read Daniel 1:8-14. How did Daniel show his resolve in the story? Take note especially verses 8 and 11. What were the risks Daniel took when making such a request?

3. What do you think made Daniel so determined to refuse the king’s food and wine? What gave him the courage and confidence to take the risks? How did such a young man become so spiritually mature?

4. Read Daniel 1:9 and 17. Where was God in Daniel’s story in chapter 1? What do you think was the relationship between God’s work and Daniel’s resolve? Do you think Daniel’s obedience depended on the foreseeable outcome? Why or why not?

5. What is your most compelling motivation to obey God? Support your answer as you share with your group. Compare your answers in your group and decide which one is the best motivation that will stand the tests of time, trouble and temptation.

6. When it comes to the issue of compromise, our tendency is to look for the outer limits of what is right and say to ourselves, “as long as I don’t cross the line, I won’t sin.” But the Bible tells us “to be careful how we live not as unwise but as wise…because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:15-16). Instead of staying as close as possible to the line of sin, we must stay away from it and closer to the center of God’s will.

Considering this wisdom, what changes will you have to make in your lifestyle? How will this affect your decisions? Share with your group for accountability and then pray for each other.
