Publisher's Summary:
In a city of rule breakers, she's the law. But in a hunt for a killer, she's breaking all the rules....
In Berkeley, people don't just disagree; they make careers out of it. And in a city where anything goes, where burned-out '60s hippies haunt the shadows along Telegraph Avenue, no one can outrun the past. Now police detective Jill Smith is plunged into a case that's pure Berkeley: a tangled tale of sins and retribution that has led to one man's disappearance, and another man's murder.
The missing man is Jill's friend, countercultural private eye Herman Ott, who always wears yellow and always offends. The murder victim was a flamboyant mediator of civic disputes, found shot to death in Ott's office. Now, fearing for Ott's safety, and defying the wishes of her own male-dominated department, Jill is about to wade into the wild, woolly world of Berkeley's most contentious citizens. For somewhere among the passionate, the poseurs, and the pranksters lurks a killer - and one very good reason why Herman Ott is running for his life....

This was my first Jill Smith detective novel. Susan Dunlap, the writer, makes the place - Berkeley - a character in her novel. The plot revolves around and illuminates the odd place of a homicide detective who is female in the unique place that is Berkeley, California. I enjoyed especially the characters she drew and the contradictions they dramatized while trying to fit into Berkeley.
Cop Out
My good friend handed me this book with a note saying "You have to read this Berkeley girl!" (I was born in Berkeley) so I started it and knew my dear cousin would also love it as she also was Ron and raised in Berkeley so I sent her the hard copy and I downloaded the book on my tablet. We both loved it as we could picture all the places mentioned in the story. Then we realized it was the last book so started reading the first ones. Enjoying all of them.
Atmospheric Mystery set in Berkeley CA
This is one of those books you keep near your bedside for late night reading so you can fall asleep after cramming your mind with all these positive thoughts and affirmations, and feel-good thinking. That way, after your unconscious continues to play with the ideas to help you fashion the new you in your dreams, you can awaken the next morning in a very âborn againâ manner.
Perhaps for that reason, itâs also one of those books that might take you six months or more to read, as itâs a form of spiritual medicine perhaps best appreciated in small doses. Which is not to say you canât sprint through the book, but itâs been my experience that Dwayneâs books are better for daily tune-ups, served up in small bite size chunks than read end to end in one sitting. But thatâs just me.
I prefer to take one of the many brilliant thesis-like ideas in the book, presented in one or two paragraphs and meditate and reflect on that for a few days. But however you get through The Power of Intention, itâs time well spent.
Two Stars
I think I read it years ago.
Excellent honest crime novel
Susan Dunlap has made a successful career by suspending her magnifying glass over the collection of quirks and off-balance characters who make up the city named Berkeley, California.
