"The institution that claimed to uphold God’s order in the earth set itself in direct opposition to the reality of God’s order throughout the universe." (From Book "Copernicus and the Jews")There are traditions or ideas passed down for centuries or millennia, believed to be true by all the experts. This was the case with the earth-centered theory of the cosmos. Basically, the educated consensus at the time of Copernicus was that all of the observable universe revolved around the earth. But there was one slight problem with this consensus- it was just plain wrong. What is most interesting is that some of the greatest opposition to Copernicus’ ideas was the Church. Is the church once again opposing God's order by setting itself up as the center of God's redemptive plans for the universe?
