In the late summer of 2000, Detective Mickey Ryan of the Amherst Police Department, a suburb of Buffalo, New York, and his partner, Joe Kowalski, must investigate a grisly murder of a young woman. Days later, another victim is discovered in the conservatory of the famous Darwin Martin House. Because the Martin House is within the city limits, they agree to team with Buffalo Police Detective Leo Rodney in search for the serial killer. Soon, though, the FBI assumes charge of the investigation. Special Agent Natalie Harmon tells the detectives that this killer specializes in copying famous serial killers…of both genders, so they don’t know if the killer is male or female. She explains that the killer has been able to elude the FBI for over twenty years because he – or she – never leaves behind any evidence.
So far, the killer has simulated the murders of such infamous serial killers as Ted Bundy, the Boston Strangler, and Jeffrey Dahmer as well as others, but this time the killer has chosen to copy the most notorious serial killer of all. At a time when detectives have still been unable to catch the famous Bike Path Killer, this case soon stirs up even more fear among local citizens. It becomes evident that the killer also knows about Mickey Ryan’s deep Irish roots and uses this knowledge to toy with Mickey, bringing up memories of the tragedy he suffered as a boy. The killer delights in playing a game of cat and mouse which leads Mickey into another search that takes him back to his childhood days in nearby Lockport, on the Erie Canal. Mickey is drawn deeper into the killer’s web when he realizes who the killer has targeted for his final victim in his vicious killing spree.
