  • I’ve Failed at This Before. Why Should This Time Be Different?

    Send us Fan Mail

    Episode Summary

The third Thought Tunnel examines the doubt that naturally follows a previous failure: “I’ve failed at this before. Why should this time be different?” Sherman treats that as a fair question rather than something to dismiss. If nothing meaningful has changed—if the same assumptions, resources, circumstances, information, and approach are being repeated—then doubt may deserve serious attention.

But failure also changes your circumstances because it gives you evidence you did not Have before. Using the example of returning to an intersection after discovering that the road to the left is closed, the episode distinguishes information about a failed route from a prediction about the destination. The practical challenge is to identify why the earlier attempt failed, take inventory of what you now Have and Need, and determine whether what has changed is meaningful enough to justify another try.

    Highlights

Previous failure gives you evidence that was unavailable before the attempt.

If essentially nothing has changed, questioning why the outcome should change is reasonable rather than negative.

Knowing that one route failed provides information about the route; it does not necessarily predict whether the destination can be reached.

“I failed” describes a result, but it does not necessarily explain why the failure occurred.

Useful analysis asks specifically whether the problem involved the idea, market, timing, money, customer, partner, pricing, pace, persistence, outside circumstances, or something still unknown.

A broad conclusion such as “I’m terrible at business” may hide a narrower problem that can actually be addressed.

Past failure can become a Thought Tunnel when the meaning assigned to it begins controlling what you are willing to investigate or try next.

Failure can reduce money, time, confidence, or options while simultaneously adding information, experience, contacts, assets, relationships, and clearer understanding.

A critical question is: What are you planning to do differently because of what happened?

Trying again is not automatically progress; meaningful changes in knowledge, resources, partners, assumptions, timing, or approach can make a new attempt materially different.

The goal is not to guarantee success, but to prevent yesterday’s result from receiving more authority over tomorrow than the evidence justifies.

    Key Quotes

“You know what happened when you turned left.”

“‘I failed’ doesn’t answer any of those questions. It’s a description of the result. It isn’t necessarily an explanation.”

“What are you planning to do differently because of what happened?”

“What is different this time—and is that difference meaningful enough to justify another try?”

“The previous failure hasn’t disappeared. It’s still part of your history. But it doesn’t have to be your forecast.”

Thought Tunnel: Maybe I’m Just Not Cut Out for This

    Episode Summary

The second Thought Tunnel examines a discouraging question that can become deeply personal after repeated setbacks: “Maybe I’m just not cut out for this.” Rather than arguing with the thought, Sherman asks what “cut out for entrepreneurship” actually means—and whether failure is evidence that a person is incapable, or evidence that an approach, fit, timing, skill, or missing resource needs closer examination.

The episode reframes weaknesses and failures as useful information rather than permanent identity. Through the example of pushing on a door marked PULL, it shows why more effort cannot correct a misunderstanding. Wants, Needs, and Haves then provide a more specific way to evaluate an opportunity: what does it require, what can you already provide, what can you learn or obtain, what could another person supply, and what may genuinely indicate that a particular direction is not a good fit?

    Highlights

Repeated business disappointments can turn a practical question—“What am I doing wrong?”—into a personal judgment about who you are.

Failure is evidence, but the important question is what the evidence actually proves.

A locked door that says PULL illustrates why additional effort does not correct a mistaken approach.

Failure can reveal problems with approach, timing, fit, information, or the need for help without defining the entrepreneur as the problem.

The episode describes failures as “inverted positives” because experience, including failure, can add to the value a person carries forward.

Old descriptions from other people—or from ourselves—should not automatically become permanent definitions of future ability.

A more useful question is what a particular entrepreneurial direction actually requires and which of those requirements you currently Have.

A Need you cannot personally satisfy may point toward something to learn, obtain, exchange for, or find through another person.

Entrepreneurs do not have to personally become every person or possess every skill their business requires.

Walking away from an opportunity that does not fit can represent increased discernment rather than proof that entrepreneurship itself is not a fit.

    Key Quotes

“Maybe there’s something about me that makes me wrong for this.”

“More effort doesn’t correct a misunderstanding.”

“An improper thought can turn a weakness into an identity. But a better thought will turn it into information.”

“A locked door doesn’t always mean you’re too weak to open it. Sometimes... you’ve been pushing on a door that opens the other way.”

    Coffee Chat Episode 2

    Episode Summary

Sherman recounts how he acquired a profitable but distressed publishing company using what became “The Concept,” then warns how success can drift into burnout when you copy others and violate your own boundaries. A sudden family health crisis forced a reset and clarified the real cost of misaligned growth. He explains why Cornucopia Strategy is a holistic, protective framework—a GPS for your entrepreneurial journey—so you can build in alignment with who you are, avoid overextension, and keep the main thing the main thing.

    Highlights

    • Using “The Concept” to locate, evaluate, and acquire a profitable distressed business—without upfront investment.

    • Why copying other companies’ playbooks led to product sprawl, overcommitment, and hidden burnout.

    • Recognizing warning signs: expanding responsibilities, sleep loss, health/mood decline, and family disconnection.

    • The reset: stepping away to re‑prioritize family, health, and alignment.

    • Cornucopia Strategy as a holistic, protective framework (a “GPS”) rather than a one‑size‑fits‑all playbook.

    • Fit first: business models work best when matched to compatible personality traits and values.

    Key Quote(s)

“Cornucopia Strategy can literally be a GPS for your business journey.”

“Don’t spend precious time copying what others do—build what truly fits who you are.”
