Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) refers to the accumulation of calcium deposits in the coronary artery walls, which provide the heart with blood. This calcification indicates atherosclerosis, an illness where plaque builds up in the arteries and may cause heart disease. CAC can be detected using a specialised CT scan known as a coronary calcium scan. 

The presence and extent of CAC are strong indicators of future cardiovascular risk, even in individuals without symptoms. CAC is crucial in cardiac assessment since higher calcium grades are associated with an increased risk of heart attacks or other heart-related problems.
