As expected, Los Angeles leaders voted 11-2 to enact one of the nation’s strictest vaccine mandates. Vaccination is required for everyone entering bars, restaurants, nail salons, gyms, and indoor sporting events. Everyone needs to be in compliance by November 4. About 69% of the county’s 10 million residents are fully vaccinated.

Sweden and Denmark, as a precautionary measure, stopped the use of Moderna's vaccine for people born in 1991 and later after reports of possible rare cardiovascular side effects. These include myocarditis and pericarditis, which involve inflammation of the heart or its lining.

For those who ask why we can’t rely on testing alone instead of vaccines, here’s one reason. Australian test kit maker Ellume recalled some at-home tests after learning they were reporting a higher-than-expected number of false positives. The tests went out to U.S. retailers and other distributors from April through August. About 427,000 tests are involved in the recall.

Being a police officer is dangerous. But now, not for the reasons you might think. COVID-19 is now killing more law enforcement officers than any other threat they face in the line of duty. The Fraternal Order of Police reports 716 officers have died since March 2020. And vaccine reluctance remains high among them. For instance, in Philadelphia, only 13% of police department employees have provided proof of vaccination.

Following the science is fine, but does science really say the bodies of famous celebrities contain more natural immunity to COVID-19 than the rest of us? Many performers and athletes are exempt from New York City’s vaccination mandates, and some local politicians are calling it a “double standard” that’s both “astounding” and “infuriating.” The loophole is entertainers can work unvaccinated in the city as long as they aren’t residents of the city.  

In the United States cases were down 24%, deaths are down 12%, and hospitalizations are down 20% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13. 

There are 9,800,155 active cases in the United States.

With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest increase in hospitalizations per capita: North Dakota 26%, Pennsylvania 16%, Michigan 14%, and Montana and Wyoming 11%.

There have been at least 707,775 deaths in the U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s been fully vaccinated: Vermont at 69.8%, Connecticut unchanged at 69.1%, and Rhode Island at 68.8%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia again unchanged at 40.5%, and Wyoming and Idaho at 42%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is unchanged at 56%.

The 5 countries with the most recent 24-hour increases in the number of fully vaccinated people: Taiwan up 4%. South Korea 3%. And New Zealand, Australia, and Oceana 2%.

Globally, cases were down 16% and deaths were down 13% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since August 27.

There are 18,025,977 active cases around the world.
