A panel that’s part of the National Institutes of Health said there’s no solid evidence for or against recommending convalescent plasma to treat COVID-19 patients. This less than 10 days after the FDA authorized emergency use of the treatment.
Florida’s ban on visiting nursing homes is being lifted by executive order of the Governor. Ron DeSantis said, “Part of having a healthy society is understanding human beings seek affection."
Apple and Google launched phase 2 of their system to alert people if they might have been exposed to the virus. But even though the tech is being built directly into the phones, states have to adopt this phone-based approach for contact tracing.
The cofounder of Devo and prominent film and TV composer Mark Mothersbaugh revealed he was at Cedars-Sinai hospital, with the coronavirus, and on a ventilator for 18 days. He believes he contracted the virus shuttling between his home and his Sunset Strip studios in late May.
In person class is the norm as millions of children have returned to school across Europe and the Middle East. School desks are separated and all schoolchildren 11 and over in places like France and the Balkans must wear masks all day. The World Health Organization said the virus is still a threat, but school closures have hurt children's mental health and social development.
Russia President Vladimir Putin said their vaccine, Sputnik V, is ready for use outside of clinical trials. Mass vaccination could begin in November or December. Meanwhile Russia’s government said coronavirus cases there have now passed one million.

Countries with the most cases in the last 7 days per capita: Aruba, Turks and Caicos Islands, Maldives, Peru, Andorra, Argentina, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Israel, and Brazil.
There’ve been 6,073,174 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States and 184,644 deaths. The 10 states with highest cumulative case counts: California with 715,616. Texas with 637,721. Florida 631,040. New York 435,510. Georgia 272,697. Illinois 238,215. Arizona 202,342. New Jersey 192,290. North Carolina 169,424. And Tennessee with 156,329 confirmed cases.
The 5 Countries with the most new cases for August 31st: India 78,169. United States 41,979. Brazil 41,889. Argentina 10,504. And Colombia 8,901.
