Connecticut officials took what they called the “extraordinary step” of closing a nursing home and moving residents out after an outbreak resulting in around 30 cases and four deaths. This right after the state made the rare move of installing an outside manager at the home in Norwich to address deficiencies.
NYC opened a testing lab in Manhattan after months of complaints about testing delays. The aim is to cut down on wait times and not depend on backlogged big lab companies. The facility will prioritize New York City residents, with turnaround times in 24-48 hours.
The federal government released broad plans aimed at distributing free vaccines within a day after an emergency use authorization or full approval is granted. A "playbook" developed by the CDC instructs state health agencies to create planning committees and prepare for a limited supply of vaccine doses in the fall.
The CDC is also reporting most children under 21 dying from COVID-19 are Hispanic, Black or Native American. Of those who died, 78% were children of color: 45% were Hispanic, 29% were Black and 4% were non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native.
ICU wards in Spain are busy again. Madrid is for the second time the capital worst hit by outbreaks on the continent. And doctors and nurses say authorities are, again, responding too erratically and too late. One doctor called it March but in slow motion.
Ireland’s entire Cabinet is self-isolating and parliament has been suspended after the health minister reported feeling unwell. Stephen Donnelly has contacted his doctor for a test, but he did take part in a cabinet meeting and press conference beforehand.

Countries with the most cases in the last 7 days per capita: Aruba, Bahrain, Israel, Andorra, Montenegro, Argentina, Costa Rica, Spain, Peru, and Kuwait. Turks and Caicos Islands drops out of the top 10.
There are 2,507,795 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: Florida, California, Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, Texas, Alabama, and South Carolina.
There’ve been a total 196,732 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related.
Globally there have been 938,179 deaths. Flat over 14 days.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Florida 156. Arkansas 147. Texas 144. California 106. Ohio 50. Virginia 45. North Carolina 38. Illinois 35. South Carolina 34. And Arizona 27.
Globally, there are 7,287,870 active cases with 1% in serious or critical condition.
There are 283,671 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, against a high of 312,135 on September 11th.
