The World Health Organization’s European director warned governments against reducing the quarantine period for people potentially exposed. WHO Europe's 53-country region recorded more than 300,000 cases in the last week, and more than half of countries reported a rise of more than 10% over the last 2 weeks.
The UK’s Health Minister meanwhile, denied Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the government was considering a 2-week national lockdown. He said there was “speculation in the press” a lockdown would be needed to contain a rapid rise in infections.
India is on track to overtake the United States to become the worst-affected country. 98,000 new cases confirmed yesterday and total caseload surpassing 5 million. And it’s spreading fast there. The country confirmed 1 million new infections in the past 11 days.
New York City wanted to be among the first to get students back into classrooms, but Mayor Bill de Blasio announced he’s delaying in-person instruction for most students due to a shortage of staff and supplies. Middle and high school students will learn remotely through at least Oct. 1.
Wynn Resorts tests groups of up to 700 employees every 2 weeks. They’ve done 15,051 tests so far and of those, there have been 548 positive cases. 51 of those were recorded before reopening and 497 were after reopening. Wynn Las Vegas has hosted more than 500,000 guests since reopening in early June.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Wheeler, GA. Craig, OK. Rosebud, MT. Chattahoochee, GA. East Feliciana, LA. New on the list, Emmons, ND. Bollinger, MO. New on the list, Stewart, GA. Hardeman TN. And Union, FL. Countries with the most cases in the last 7 days per capita: Aruba, Israel, Bahrain, Andorra, Montenegro, Argentina, Costa Rica, Spain, Peru, and Kuwait.
There are 2,517,344 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: Florida, California, Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, Texas, Alabama, and South Carolina.
There’ve been a total 197,633 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related.
Globally there have been 943,066 deaths. Down 1% over 14 days.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Florida 142. Texas 98. California 91. Georgia 55. Arizona 38. Virginia 36. North Carolina 31. South Carolina and Missouri 26. And Illinois and Ohio with 25.
Globally, there are 7,360,220 active cases with 1% in serious or critical condition.
There are 305,952 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, against a high of 312,135 on September 11th.
The 5 Countries with the most new cases: India 96,793. United States 39,216. Brazil 35,757. Argentina 12,701. And Spain 11,291.
