The FDA approved the first drug to treat COVID-19, and it’s Remdesivir, an antiviral medicine given to patients through an IV. A large study led by the NIH showed the drug cut the time to recovery by five days. It works by inhibiting a substance the virus uses to copy itself.
Spain and France each surpassed 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases this week. Europe is battling outbreaks and record numbers throughout the continent. Spain and France now have the sixth and seventh highest global counts, respectively.
France announced a vast extension of the nightly curfew it already had in place, saying “the second wave is here.” The curfew is being extended from eight regions of France to 38 more regions and Polynesia. And it will probably last at least six weeks.
If you must travel somewhere, Costa Rica is a possibility. Starting October 26th, they’ll eliminate the negative coronavirus test requirement for foreign tourists. You also wouldn’t have to quarantine upon entering. You will, however, still need to buy travel medical insurance from one of two Costa Rican companies and complete the Health Pass epidemiological form.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Norton, KS. Bon Homme, SD. Miner, SD. Harding, SD. Faulk, SD. Sheridan, KS. Carter, MT. Foster, ND. Menominee, WI. And Webster, NE.
There are 2,777,969 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, Virginia, Missouri, Maryland, Texas, Alabama, and Illinois.
The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.
The retransmission rate is currently highest in New Jersey, Rhode Island, Colorado, Vermont, and Ohio. While the lowest retransmission is found in Mississippi, Maine, Delaware, California, and Oregon.
There’ve been a total 223,000 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 2.7%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Texas 92. California 71. Florida 63. North Carolina 50. South Carolina 47. Michigan 46. Illinois and Indiana 44. Tennessee 41. And Ohio 39.
Globally, there are 9,664,738 active cases.
There are 443,907 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, and that sets another new all time high.
The five countries with the most new cases: United States 74,301. India 54,482. France 41,622. Brazil 31,985. And the UK 21,242.
There have now been 1,135,880 deaths worldwide. Down 5% over 14 days.
