Britain has the worst virus death toll in Europe, with more than 46,700 dead. It passed 1 million confirmed cases Saturday. Owners of pubs, restaurants, theaters, and gyms all say the lockdown will be devastating.
Across all of Europe, new cases have doubled in five weeks to over 10 million total infections. Last month, Latin America and Asia also reported over 10 million total cases in their regions. It took Europe almost nine months to record its first 5 million cases, but the next 5 million took place in just over one month.
In Slovakia, they feel mass testing is the answer and that’s exactly what they’ve done. Swabs from more than two and half million people were taken this weekend, that’s about half the country’s entire population. It took 40,000 medics at about 5,000 sites. The testing was voluntary. But those who decline must go into self-isolation or face fines.
A CDC report suggests getting the virus from someone you live with can be quick and easy, regardless of age. 53% of participants living with someone who tested positive wound up sick themselves within 5 days.
Add Prince William to the list of celebrities who have battled COVID-19. He says he “struggled to breathe” after being struck down. He kept the diagnosis a secret because he didn’t want to alarm the nation. He caught it in April days after his dad, Prince Charles, and Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, tested positive.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Bon Homme, SD. Norton, KS. Buffalo, SD. San Saba, TX. Elliott, KY. Wallace, KS. Ellsworth, KS. Sheridan, KS. Dewey, SD. And Wells, ND.
There are now over 3 million active cases in the United States at 3,133,835. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Arizona, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, Missouri, Maryland, Illinois, and Alabama.
The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana, and Alaska.
The retransmission rate is currently highest in Rhode Island, Vermont, Wyoming, Connecticut, and Iowa. There are two states with a retransmission rate below 1 and they are Mississippi and Florida.
There’ve been a total 230,967 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 2.55%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Illinois 35. Texas and Arkansas 33. Indiana 32. Florida 27. Massachusetts 22. New York 19. Minnesota 18. Wisconsin 16. And Mississippi 14.
Globally, there are now 11,850,938 active cases.
There are 407,978 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, against a high of 550,012 on October 30.
The five countries with the most new cases: United States 71,321. India 46,441. France 46,290. Italy 29,907. And the U.K. 23,254.
There have now been 1,199,684 deaths worldwide. Up 19% over 14 days.
