This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for November 4th, 2020.


The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is reaching record highs in a growing number of states. Missouri, Oklahoma, Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska, North Dakota and New Mexico all reported record high hospitalizations this week. Nebraska’s largest hospitals started limiting elective surgeries. Officials in Iowa and Missouri warned bed capacity could soon be overwhelmed.


In a departure from its less strict approach to the pandemic, Sweden announced new restrictions. People must work from home if possible, avoid indoor spaces, and only have physical contact with people in the same household.  


50% effective in preventing or reducing the severity of the coronavirus, that’s the bar the FDA says a vaccine has to reach. No vaccine is 100% effective, but even at 50%, experts say it could help. Even the flu vaccine’s effectiveness varies from year to year, from 20 to 60%.


A study out of Mount Sinai says almost 20% of New York City residents were infected with Covid. That’s about 1.7 million people. The same study shows its fatality rate is 10 times deadlier than the flu. The testing found positive cases going back to February, suggesting that New Yorkers were infected with Covid-19 weeks before its first reported case.

The celebrity infection of the day is…Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway. The Denver Broncos said their president of football operations and general manager is experiencing mild symptoms. Elway is quarantining at home.


The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Norton, KS. Bon Homme, SD. Ellsworth, KS. Wallace, KS. San Saba, TX. Wells, ND. Sheridan, KS. Walsh, ND. Potter, SD. And Bennett, SD.


There are now 3,217,717 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Arizona, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Maryland, and Alabama.


The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana, and Wyoming.


The retransmission rate is currently highest in Vermont, Wyoming, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Iowa. There are two states with a retransmission rate below 1 and they are Mississippi and North Carolina.  


There’ve been a total 232,553 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 2.51%.


The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Texas 92. Tennessee 75. Illinois 68. North Carolina 67. California 60. Florida 55. Wisconsin 52. Indiana 49. Michigan 45. And Arizona 38.


Globally, there are now 12,271,877 active cases.


There are 508,190 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, against a high of 550,012 on October 30.  


The five countries with the most new cases: United States 94,463. India 46,033. France 36,330. Italy 28,244. And the U.K. 20,018.  


There have now been 1,212,844 deaths worldwide. Up 25% over 14 days.
