COVID-19 ICU admissions have doubled since late September but aren’t taking up most of the beds. They still only make up 18% of ICU usage.
Italy’s latest restrictions include a partial lockdown of the region around Milan. The country has been divided into three zones - red, orange and yellow, according to the intensity of the epidemic. In red zones, citizens can only leave home for work, health reasons or emergencies, and bars, restaurants and most shops are closed.
Greece is facing a universal month-long lockdown as a spike in cases hits new records. It will be their second and could be in place as early as tomorrow.
Health officials in South Korea have approved a new test that apparently detects COVID-19 and seasonal influenza from the same samples. Those illnesses are hard to tell apart based on symptoms, so having a diagnosis for both in three to six hours is expected to lighten the burden on medical workers.
A Texas veterinarian is just one of many who’ve been tracking the spread of COVID in pets. Dr. Sarah Hamer has swabbed not just dogs and cats, but hamsters and guinea pigs. She’s found at least 19 cases of infection. Nationwide, cats and dogs who caught it from sick owners represent 80% of positive cases.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Luce, MI. Norton, KS. Bon Homme, SD. Ellsworth, KS. Toole, MT. San Saba, TX. Wells, ND. Sheridan, KS. Potter, SD. And Walsh, ND.
There are now 3,269,507 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Arizona, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, Illinois overtakes Missouri, Maryland, and Alabama.
The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Montana.
The retransmission rate is currently highest in Maine, Vermont, Minnesota, Iowa, and Rhode Island. There is only one state with a retransmission rate below 1 and that is Mississippi.
There’ve been a total 233,633 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 2.50%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Texas 150. California 67. Illinois 55. Wisconsin 54. North Carolina 50. Missouri 44. Georgia and Ohio 43. Florida 42. And Pennsylvania 41.
Globally, there are now 12,271,877 active cases.
There are 491,692 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours, against a high of 550,012 on October 30.
The five countries with the most new cases: United States crosses the 100,000 cases in one day mark with 108,389. India 50,465. France 40,558. Italy 30,550. And the U.K. 25,177.
There have now been 1,224,144 deaths worldwide. Up 24% over 14 days.
