Pfizer said its vaccine may be 90% effective. The tests are early and incomplete. They’ll next apply later this month for emergency-use FDA approval. If that goes well, the vaccine could arrive before the end of the year.
Speaking of the FDA, it cleared emergency use of the first antibody drug to help the immune system fight COVID-19. The experimental drug is from Eli Lilly and for people 12 and older with mild or moderate cases not requiring hospitalization. It's a one-time treatment given through an IV.
The final-stage trial of a Chinese frontrunner vaccine candidate was halted in Brazil due to a serious adverse event. Brazil will not say what that adverse event was. Vaccines from China, including the one in question, have already been given to hundreds of thousands of people under an expansive emergency use approval.
Masks are now required in Utah. The Governor declared a state of emergency and ordered the mandate to stem a surge in hospitalizations. Masks must be worn in public, at work and any time citizens are within 6 feet of anyone who doesn’t live with them. The Governor said the debate about freedom to not wear a mask is over.
And New York is exercising a way to punish private businesses that don’t follow coronavirus restrictions. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said a Long Island country club’s liquor license was suspended because it hosted a wedding linked to 34 cases.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Childress, TX. Norton, KS. Jones, IA. Toole, MT. Calhoun, IA. Eddy, ND. Walsh, ND. Cavalier, ND. Dewey, SD. And Hodgeman, KS.
There are now 3,624,898 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Arizona, Illinois, Texas surpasses Virginia, Missouri, Georgia, Maryland, and Alabama.
The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
The retransmission rate is currently highest in Maine, Vermont, Iowa, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. There are two states with a retransmission rate below 1 and they are Mississippi and North Carolina.
There’ve been a total 238,202 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 2.41%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Florida 58. Texas 44. Indiana 35. New York and Michigan 32. Georgia 29. California and West Virginia 28. Connecticut 27. And Illinois 25.
Globally, there are 13,921,320 active cases.
There are 485,142 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours compared to a high of 605,573 on November 5.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 125,689. India 37,211. Italy 25,271. Russia 21,798. And Poland 21,713.
There have now been 1,262,413 deaths worldwide. Up 39% over 14 days.
