The U.S. has seen more new cases already in November than any other month of the pandemic. More than 3 million new cases between November 1 and 22. At least 83,227 Covid-19 patients were hospitalized Saturday, the 12th straight day the US has broken its record for hospitalizations.
How bad is the hospital situation? A hospital in Indiana is so low on help it issued a public plea via Facebook for anyone with medical experience. The Mayo Clinic is bringing back retirees and moving researchers to patient care after 905 employees contracted the virus in the last two weeks. 18% of hospitals in the country reported a critical shortage of medical staff. In five states, more than a third of hospitals report critical staffing shortages.
The FDA has approved the antibody Covid treatment Regeneron for emergency use. The treatment combines two antibodies administered by IV. It’s only for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in people 12 years and older who are at high risk of developing more severe symptoms.
In California, even outdoor dining at restaurants across Los Angeles County will shut down on Wednesday and stay shut down for at least three weeks. Cases have tripled in the state in just the last month.
For all the warnings and bans and lockdowns, Americans appear to be attempting to live life as usual. More than 2 million people were screened at U.S. airports Friday and Saturday. Which means they are traveling for Thanksgiving. The TSA says they’ve actually seen passenger volume go over 900,000 a day frequently since early October.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Crowley, CO. Lee, KY. Union, NM. Foster, ND. Fallon, MT. Kearny, KS. Marshall, KS. Rawlins, KS. Pierce, ND. And Alfalfa, OK.
There are now 4,873,425 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Illinois, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Missouri, Virginia, Maryland is back over Michigan, then New York.
The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa.
The reproduction rate is currently highest in New Hampshire, New Mexico, Vermont, Washington, and New Jersey. There are two states with a reproduction rate below 1 and they are Mississippi and, interestingly, South Dakota.
There’ve been a total 256,745 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related with a current national fatality rate of 2.14%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Illinois 99. Texas 77. Florida and Indiana 59. Tennessee 55. South Dakota 42. Minnesota 40. Pennsylvania 38. New Mexico 33. And Iowa 32.
Globally, there are 16,824,439 active cases.
There are 509,621 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 656,099 on November 12.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 136,627. India 44,404. Italy 28,337. Russia 24,581. And the UK 18,662.
There have now been 1,386,465 deaths worldwide. Up 18% over 14 days.
