This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for December 7th, 2020.


More than one million new cases have been logged in US in the first five days of December, according to Johns Hopkins University. And the total number of US cases has now reached more than 14.5 million, with 281,199 deaths as of Saturday.


Southern California and San Joaquin Valley residents went under a stay-at-home order last night. The mandate was triggered when ICU capacity in those areas fell below 15%. The order affects some 27 million people, including Los Angeles and San Diego.


Residents in the U.K. could start getting their first shots as early as this week. Doses are scheduled to be delivered to hospitals starting today. Nursing home residents, health care workers and those 80 and over will be first in line for the vaccine.


But in the U.S. nearly 55% of New York City firefighters responded “no” when asked by one of their unions if they would take the vaccine from Pfizer when it’s made available. The New York City Fire Department will not be making the vaccine mandatory for its members.


As employers try to figure out how to reopen their offices—a great many of their workers are saying, don’t bother. 27% surveyed say they'd never or rarely work from their employer's office in an ideal world. 48% expect their employer to expand remote working options post-pandemic.


The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Lincoln, CO. Dewey, SD. Bent, CO. Prairie, MT. Montour, PA. Ziebach, SD. Lassen, CA. Deaf Smith, TX. Childress, TX. And Richland, MT.


There are now over 6 million active cases in the United States at 6,015,130. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida overtakes Illinois, Arizona, New York surpasses Texas, then Missouri, Virginia, Michigan, and Maryland.  


The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are New Mexico, South Dakota, Wyoming, Indiana, and Ohio.


The reproduction rate is currently highest in California, New York, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Arizona. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are Iowa, North Dakota, Wyoming, Illinois, and Montana.


There’ve been a total 282,236 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.95%.


The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Illinois 99. Florida 93. Texas 70. Minnesota 64. California and Pennsylvania 55. Massachusetts 51. New York 45. South Carolina 43. And Arkansas 40.


Globally, there are now over 19 million active cases at 19,266,794.


There are 624,070 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 656,099 on November 12.


The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 173,861. India 32,272. Turkey 30,402. Russia 29,039. And Brazil 26,363.


There have now been 1,535,107 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. Up 14% over 14 days.
