This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for December 8th, 2020.
Britain begins its vaccine program this week and now the job is reassuring people it’s safe and effective. Not easy, because a sizable minority don’t believe it is. And the World Health Organization estimates it’ll take 65-70% vaccine coverage to reach population immunity.
South Korea’s health minister is using the harshest wording he can think of to communicate the gravity of the situation there. He said the Seoul metropolitan area is now a “COVID-19 war zone.” They’ve recorded more than 5,300 new infections in 10 days and most of that has come from Seoul.
New data released by Health and Human Services gives a detailed picture of how individual hospitals in the United States are holding up. In 126 counties, the average hospital is at least 90% occupied. The states with the most counties above this threshold are Kentucky, Georgia, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Texas.
The vaccine is already creating jobs. If you need one, CVS Health is looking for thousands of pharmacists, nurses, pharmacy technicians and more. The problem for CVS is…so is everybody else. The Department of Defense said CVS and Walgreens will be the ones to give vaccines to people in long-term care facilities nationwide.
Pathetic but very 2020 advice for Americans this holiday season from the World Health Organization. Don't hug. Dr. Michael Ryan said, “It’s a horrible thing to think we’d be here as the World Health Organization saying to people, ‘Don’t hug each other.’ It’s terrible. But that’s the brutal reality.” At the moment, the U.S. accounts for a third of all cases in the world.
