This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for December 9th, 2020.


The U.K. has started vaccinating. The first was given yesterday morning before dawn at a hospital in the English city of Coventry to 90-year-old Margaret Keenan. The second went to a man named William Shakespeare, so British social media are calling it the taming of the flu.


When will Covid-19 peak in the U.S.? Well the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation has hazarded a guess. January 20. They say that’s a worst-case scenario and assuming a 90-day vaccine rollout with 3 million doses delivered a day.


But first, the vaccines have to get approved by the FDA. An analysis released yesterday shows Pfizer’s vaccine showed no specific safety concerns. Next, a group of independent experts will meet and advise the FDA on whether or not it should get emergency use authorization.


In Canada, possible punishment if you don’t get an injection. Ontario’s health minister said those who refuse to take it could have restrictions put on them. These would make it hard to do things like travel and go to activities in communal spaces like movie theatres. Ontario will issue government papers people can show to prove they’re in compliance.


It’s not just us. Four lions at Barcelona Zoo in Spain tested positive. It’s the second known case of large felines getting it. They were tested after they started exhibiting symptoms. Two staff also tested positive after an outbreak was detected last month.


The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Lincoln, CO. Bent, CO. Dewey, SD. Montour, PA. Alfalfa, OK. Deaf Smith, TX. Lassen, CA. Prairie, MT. Jackson, AR. And Pawnee, KS.


There are now 6,211,242 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Texas leaps to #2, then Florida, Illinois, New York, Georgia goes back on the list, as does Ohio. Then Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.  


The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Alaska, Indiana, Utah, South Dakota, and New Mexico.


The reproduction rate is currently highest in California, Georgia, New York, New Hampshire, and Delaware. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and New Mexico.  


There’ve been a total 286,189 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.91%.


The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 212. Michigan 203. Texas 199. Iowa 196. Pennsylvania 174. Illinois 168. Missouri 132. Indiana 126. Florida 120. And Tennessee 100.


Globally, there are now 19,540,692 active cases.


There are 632,708 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 656,099 on November 12.


The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 208,121. Brazil 47,850. Turkey 33,198. India 32,067. And Russia 26,097.


There have now been 1,555,898 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. Up 14% over 14 days.
