This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for December 11th, 2020.

There have been 3,124 American deaths in one day, the highest single day total yet. That’s more than D-Day or 9/11. One million new cases in five days. More than 106,000 hospitalized and the number of people in the hospital with Covid is setting records almost daily.

The next step is done. A panel of outside experts yesterday recommended the FDA grant emergency use authorization to Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine. The vote was 17 to 4. The FDA does not have to follow the panel’s recommendation but is widely expected to do so. The rollout in the U.S. could begin in a matter of days.

If you were going to give an award out to the states that handled the pandemic best as of now, which states would get it? Dr. Anthony Fauci has an opinion on that and he’s singled out Vermont and New York. He said back in September Vermont should serve as a model. New York is more of a surprise since it was for a time the epicenter. But Fauci says the state is doing all the right things.

A couple more celebrities have tested positive. Ellen DeGeneres said she has the virus but is feeling fine, though production on her show has stopped. And Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba tested positive and is showing symptoms, but is not hospitalized. More seriously, New Hampshire’s Speaker of the House, Dick Hinch, died of Covid Wednesday. He was elected Speaker just one week ago.

A proof of concept study has backed up the belief dogs can be trained to detect Covid-19 by sniffing human sweat. Many countries are thinking about using them as a rapid, reliable, and inexpensive way to prescreen people in various circumstances. They can apparently detect it with no symptoms present.
