This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for December 18th, 2020.


French President Emmanuel Macron tested positive for COVID-19 after a week in which he met with numerous European leaders. The 42-year-old is experiencing symptoms and will self-isolate for seven days.


A second vaccine moved closer to distribution, winning the unanimous endorsement of a panel of experts. Now the Moderna vaccine goes for a final decision by the FDA on emergency use. The shot claims to provide 94% protection.


California hospitals are struggling. In fact there’s 0% availability of ICU beds in Southern California. Hospitalizations have broken records for 18 consecutive days. The state has activated its "mass fatality" program, which means refrigerated mobile morgues and the distribution of 5,000 body bags to hard hit counties like Los Angeles and San Diego.


However, a judge in California cleared the way yesterday for all restaurants in San Diego County to resume on-site dining. That’s a setback to the governor’s stay-at-home order and he has appealed the decision.


It’s advised the following at least observe caution in getting the vaccine. People who have an autoimmune disorder like lupus, people with a history of severe allergic reactions to other vaccines or injections, people with weakened immune systems like those with cancer or HIV, and pregnant and breastfeeding women. That’s not to say these folks can’t be immunized, but additional caution is warranted.


The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Bent, CO. Alfalfa, OK. Guadalupe, NM. Pershing, NV. Montour, PA. Atascosa, TX. Lassen, CA. Lincoln, CO. Kimball, NE. And Johnson, NE.


There are now more than 7 million active cases in the United States, at 7,017,785. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, Arizona, New York, Illinois, Texas, Virginia overtakes Missouri, then Michigan, and Colorado.  

The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Tennessee, Rhode Island, Arizona, Indiana, and New Mexico.


The reproduction rate is currently highest in Maine, California, Arizona, New Hampshire, and West Virginia. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are Wyoming, North Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.  


There’ve been a total 310,434 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.83%.


The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 263. Texas 255. Pennsylvania 246. Michigan 213. Illinois 208. Tennessee 177. New York 156. Arizona 147. Ohio 117. And Florida 102.


Globally, there are 20,758,423 active cases.


There were 726,265 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 748,974 reported on December 11.


The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 230,982. Brazil 68,832. The U.K. 35,383. Germany 30,951. And Russia 28,214.


There have now been 1,660,281 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. Up 10% over 14 days.
