The state passed 2 million cases Christmas Eve and that’s before the effect of Americans traveling and gathering hits. Even with vaccines at least one coronavirus model projects the US death toll will top 567,000 by April 1.
The chief scientific adviser for Operation Warp Speed said the frequency of allergic reactions to the Pfizer vaccine is higher than what would be expected for other vaccines. Discussions are underway between the vaccine makers and the NIH about holding clinical trials of vaccines in very allergic populations.
Another new variant of the coronavirus appears to have emerged in Nigeria. Add that to variants already announced in Britain and South Africa. The mutations are leading to the swift return of international travel restrictions and other measures. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country.
Mexico started administering the first 3,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. The country's 1.4 million health workers will be first in line, followed by the elderly, those with underlying health conditions, and teachers. Mexico was the first country in Latin America to get the vaccine.
Two newly opened In-N-Out Burger restaurants in Colorado both had active outbreaks with 80 employees testing positive. The locations are in Aurora and Colorado Springs. Neither had allowed indoor dining and the state has not linked any customers to either outbreak. Both restaurants remain open.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Bent, CO. Montour, PA. Crowley, CO. Richmond, VA. La Salle, TX. Lassen, CA. Lawrence, IL. Perry, IL. Dawson, MT. And Guadalupe, NM.
There are now 7,555,137 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, New York, Arizona, Virginia surpasses Illinois, Texas, Missouri, Georgia, and Colorado.
The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Tennessee, Texas, California, Rhode Island, and Oklahoma.
The reproduction rate is currently highest in Maine, West Virginia, Oklahoma, New Hampshire, and Hawaii. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are Alaska, North Dakota, Washington, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
There’ve been a total 329,022 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.78%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 306. Pennsylvania 258. Texas 242. New York 130. Florida 121. Illinois 118. Arizona 115. Ohio 95. Alabama 89. And Colorado 88.
Globally, there are 21,852,944 active cases.
There were 690,370 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 748,974 reported on December 11.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 193,030. Brazil 58,916. The U.K. 39,036. Russia 29,935. And Germany 26,418.
There have now been 1,741,501 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. Up 7% over 14 days.
