This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for February 5th, 2021. 


Coronavirus deaths in the US are still at more than 3,000 a day, despite vaccines and falling infections. The new CDC director says deaths could ebb as early as next week. The biggest driver to the U.S. death toll over the past month has been California, averaging more than 500 a day.


Johnson & Johnson has officially asked U.S. regulators to clear the world’s first single-dose vaccine for use. Preliminary results show it to be safe and offer strong protection against moderate to severe COVID-19, but not as strong as two-dose competitors. The regulatory panel doesn’t even meet again until Feb. 26.


The situation in Mexico is being described as “desperate.” The country is running out of vaccines, a government registration website crashed for a third straight day, and restaurant workers are protesting being driven into poverty. Hospitals are over 80% full.


The CDC has found the pandemic disproportionately affects LGBTQ Americans. Why? More underlying health conditions, including higher rate of asthma, cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, and strokes. Black and Hispanic LGBTQ people are at an even higher risk.


The tournament’s director says the Australian Open will start Monday even though a worker at one of the Melbourne hotels used to quarantine players and their entourages tested positive. The government, however, has made it clear safety is paramount and there are “no guarantees.”


In the United States cases were down 30%, deaths are flat, and hospitalizations down 23% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 25th.  


There are now 9,775,273 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Florida, Arizona, and Georgia. 


The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Aleutians East Borough, AK. Dimmit, TX. Chattahoochee, GA. Zavala, TX. Lincoln, CO. Hitchcock, NE. San Saba, TX. Oldham, TX. Forest, PA. And Maverick, TX. 


The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Texas, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Arizona, and Oklahoma. 


There’ve been a total 455,657 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.7%.


The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 501. Texas 412. Florida 226. Arizona 176. Georgia and Tennessee 169. Alabama 162. New York 151. North Carolina 150. And Pennsylvania 130. 


The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose are Alaska at 13.4%, West Virginia at 10.9%, and New Mexico at 10.4%. The bottom 3 are Idaho at 6%, Missouri at 6.1%, and Iowa at 6.3%.


Globally, cases were down 22%, and deaths down 1% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 11.  


Globally, there are 25,884,477 active cases.


The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 121,627. Brazil 57,848. Spain 29,960. France 23,448. And the U.K. 20,634. 

 

There have now been 2,281,608 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.
