This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for February 12th, 2021.

It’s encouraging to report each day numbers of new and active cases going down but…it remains to be explained why that suddenly started happening in early January. Experts say it can’t be the vaccines or herd immunity, and there’s been no explosive burst in compliance with safety suggestions. Some say it’s tied to warmer weather but again, the freefall began in early January, and what about last summer when we were told warmer weather had no significant effect? Others say people obeyed rules during the holidays, but reports were that travel numbers and gatherings were very high. While they have no answer, experts do tend to agree that the rapidly dropping numbers run the risk of giving the public a false sense of security and threatens to roll back safety measure compliance.

The Associated Press reports more than 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients in New York state were released from hospitals into nursing homes early in the pandemic. It was a controversial order criticized for accelerating outbreaks. The new number is more than 40% higher than what the state health department previously reported.

The U.S. has finalized deals to buy 200 million more vaccine doses from Pfizer and Moderna by the end of July. The goal is still to have all Americans inoculated by mid-summer. That’s on top of doses already scheduled for delivery that should bring the total supply to 300 million.

Positive results around how some common drugs already on the market might be used to treat Covid-19. Oxford researchers say budesonide, a common asthma drug, reduced by 90% the need for urgent care or hospitalization compared to the usual treatment for virus patients. And the rheumatoid arthritis drug tocilizumab appears to reduce the risk of death in hospitalized patients, especially when combined with the steroid dexamethasone. Pardon any mispronunciations there.

In the United States cases were down 36%, deaths are down 22%, and hospitalizations down 27% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 25th.
