This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for November 8th, 2021.

Things have gotten stricter in Los Angeles. One of the strictest vaccine mandates has gone into effect today. Proof of vaccination is required for entry into a wide variety of businesses. Restaurants, malls, theaters – both live and movie, nail places, hair places, gyms, yoga studios, museums, convention centers, and the list goes on. First offense gets a business a warning, but fines could later run from $1,000 to $5,000.

The US is pushing forward with a new air travel policy that will make many foreign would-be visitors ineligible to enter the country. Today, fully vaccinated foreign travelers can enter. But here’s the problem. The vaccines have to have been among those authorized by the FDA or that got an emergency use listing from the World Health Organization. Anyone who got, for example, Russia’s Sputnik vaccine, used in 70 countries worldwide, are out of luck.

More support for the old trope that you’re likely to get sick while in a hospital. Federal and state records show that more than 10,000 patients were diagnosed with COVID in a U.S. hospital last year after they were admitted for something else. Plus, about 21% of the patients who got COVID in the hospital from April to September last year died, compared to only 8% of other Medicare patients who died in the hospital during that time of non-COVID issues.

Amazingly, Tonga has recorded its first COVID case. In late October, a fully vaccinated passenger from a Christchurch repatriation flight tested positive while in hotel quarantine. Tonga’s enforced quarantine for anyone entering the country since early 2020. All of Tonga is now in lockdown for at least seven days with a curfew.

The vaccine debate has officially reached peak silliness. A purely fictional costumed kids’ character, Big Bird, was vaccinated, which of course cannot be true. He tweeted, "My wing is feeling a little sore, but it'll give my body an extra protective boost that keeps me and others healthy." That was met by criticism from some politicians aimed at the fictional bird costume. So we have people who aren’t real arguing about things that aren’t real. Welcome to COVID in America.  

In the United States cases were flat, deaths are down 19%, and hospitalizations are down 13% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since October 25. 

The five states that have the most deaths per million are Mississippi, Alabama, New Jersey, Louisiana, and New York.

There are 9,228,410 active cases in the United States.

With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest increase in hospitalizations per capita: Utah 39%, New Mexico 20%, Nebraska 15%, Colorado 14%, and Arizona 12%.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Nome Census Area, AK. Lincoln, WV. Bethel Census Area, AK. Park, MT. Wadena, MN. Grant, NM. Carbon, UT. San Juan, NM. Rolette, ND. And Coos, NH.

There have been at least 754,429 deaths in the U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s been fully vaccinated: Vermont at 71.6%, Rhode Island at 71.3%, and Connecticut and Maine at 71%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia at 41.1%, Wyoming at 44.4%, and Alabama at 45%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 58.2%.

Globally, cases were up 6% and deaths were down 1% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since October 15.

There are 18,704,978 active cases around the world.
