This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for November 12th, 2021.

It is just not looking good in Europe. Germany had a record-high number of daily cases yesterday as new measures are being considered. One of the country's top virologists warns another 100,000 could die in the next few months if the vaccination rate doesn't quickly accelerate.

To the south, in Austria, that country’s chancellor is stepping up threats of lockdowns for the unvaccinated as new cases soar. At least one province is definitely taking that step next week. Their rate of new cases is three times that of Germany’s.

Russia’s preparing new restrictions that will only allow vaccinated people with QR codes to access most public places, shops, transportation, and restaurants. Fewer than 40% of Russians are fully vaccinated, which combines with lax public attitudes and government’s reluctance to toughen restrictions in making the situation there worse.

Denmark, also headed for at least a limited lockdown. The Dutch public health institute announced the highest daily tally of new cases since the pandemic began, and this is in a country where more than 84% of the adult population is fully vaccinated.

A common question being asked now is why, in places like Denmark, and in states like Vermont where vaccination rates are over 70%, are cases and breakouts so bad? It’s a fair question. Most experts claim it’s the start of a seasonal spike in places with cooler weather. Or that vaccines given early in 2020 are waning. Or maybe people are gathering indoors without masks now. You starting to get the idea nobody knows? Either way, the hope is that because of high vaccination rates, these case surges won’t lead to out of control hospitalizations and deaths.

In the United States cases were up 7%, deaths are down 13%, and hospitalizations are down 12% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since November 3. 

The five states that had the most daily deaths per 100,000 are Alaska, Wyoming, Oregon, Kentucky, and Idaho.

There are 9,183,252 active cases in the United States.

With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest increase in hospitalizations per capita: Utah 29%, New Mexico 20%, Arizona and Michigan 15%, and Colorado and Minnesota 14%.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Lincoln, WV. Nome Census Area, AK. Bethel Census Area, AK. Humboldt, NV. Scotts Bluff, NE. Grant, NM. San Juan, NM. Fayette, AL. Carbon, UT. And Wadena, MN.

There have been at least 759,636 deaths in the U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s been fully vaccinated: Vermont unchanged at 71.8%, Rhode Island at 71.5%, and Connecticut and Maine at 71.2%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia unchanged at 41.1%, Wyoming at 44.6%, and Alabama unchanged at 45.2%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is unchanged at 58.5%.

Globally, cases were up 8% and deaths were down 1% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since October 15.

There are 18,982,709 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Germany 50,377. The United States 43,596. The U.K. 42,408. Russia 40,759. And Turkey 24,898.  

There have been at least 5,079,013 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.
