Publisher's Summary:
For many of the 40 million Americans who undergo anesthesia each year, it is a source of great fear and fascination. In Counting Backwards, Dr. Henry Jay Przybylo - an anesthesiologist with more than 30 years of experience - has written an unforgettable account of the routine procedure's daily dramas and fundamental mysteries.
Przybylo has administered anesthesia more than 30,000 times in his career - erasing consciousness, denying memory, and immobilizing the body before reversing all of these effects - on newborn babies, screaming toddlers and sullen teenagers, his own son, and even a gorilla. With compassion and candor, he weaves his experiences into intimate stories that explore the nature of consciousness, the politics of pain relief, and the wonder of modern medicine.
Through its intense and humane tales of mistakes, near-disasters, life-saving successes, and moments of grace, Counting Backwards shines a light on one of the most fascinating but unexplored corners of the medical world.
Critic Reviews:
"[Pryzbylo] weaves an enjoyable narrative out of...the wealth of experience he has gained over more than 30 years...[and] offers a rare and thoughtful look behind the scenes of this crucial yet arcane specialization." (

Great insight for general public and healthcare alike!
An excellent book. A valuable read for the general public wanting to understand more about anesthesia and healthcare professionals alike. The blend of medical history along with clinical experiences was especially captivating.
Understanding care from the other side of the operating table.
Spectacular writing, moving stories - brought to you by an anesthesiologist specializing in pediatrics. Lovingly told, stays with you.
Excellent read!!
Excellent read for an Anesthesiologist. I enjoyed it tremendously. Very well written.
... grandson - but grandpa had to read first - good book!
It was a gift for grandson - but grandpa had to read first - good book!!!!!
Disappointing
Somewhat of an interesting read, but nothing special, and not much substance. My overall impression is that the author is a good man and a good doctor, but the tone of the writing was self-important, and I was rather shocked that he refers to one young overweight pediatric patient as "a butterball" and (less shocking but still concerning) a couple of other children as "chunky." I do a lot of clinical writing and cannot imagine ever using those words when describing clients or patients.
Overall I thought this book was just okay, a chain of anecdotes and no more. I thought the title was brilliant, and wish I could say the same about the book.
