The Contemplating Christian contemplates the choice between courage and despair. Today, men are being forced between two choices: Peter Pan (a juvenile man) and hook (pretending to be a man). These are caused by shame in culture. Tolkien gives men hope of a third choice - making a vow to the true, good, and beautiful while siding with the stars. This will allow men to fulfill their duty and actually grow up to become men.
