MODULE DESCRIPTION
Science fiction has long explored both utopian and dystopian visions of advanced technology influencing humanity. As AI systems integrate further into our lives, nurturing ethically sound development is crucial to avoid potential harms. This module brings together experts from diverse fields to discuss how some of science fiction's iconic AI characters can inform guidelines for cultivating ethical AI.
Through a moderated roundtable discussion, participants will examine key figures that have shaped thinking around issues like autonomous decision making, unintended consequences of new technologies, and balancing oversight with enabling long term societal benefits. Characters like Data, HAL 9000 and more will serve as starting points for analyzing real-world techniques being applied to ensure AI systems are robustly aligned with human values and priorities around fairness, safety and transparency.
MODULE PURPOSE
The purpose of this module is to gain insight from leaders at the cutting edge of AI safety research and development on how lessons from speculative fiction can inform practical strategies. By exploring prototypical examples of both idealized and problematic AI behaviors depicted in famous sci-fi works, the discussion aims to advance understanding of developing advanced technologies according to principles of responsible innovation.
