Diabetes and kidney diseases can be fatal. What’s the result when a patient already suffering from one of the conditions is infected with COVID-19? Today, Dr. Kumar and special guest Dr. Baer discuss a grave medical danger that encircles afflicted patients and experts in the medical community: What are the consequences of COVID-19 on diabetes and renal diseases?
Key points from today's episode are:
1. The complication rate of COVID-19 is much higher in patients that have diabetes or kidney disease. There’s a 5% chance of developing COVID-19 pneumonia in the general population and a 10% chance in the diabetic/diabetic nephropathic population.
2. Diabetic Nephropathy has minimal symptoms in the beginning stages. The good news is, if diagnosed in the early stages, the chances of reducing kidney function loss is significantly higher, so regular check-ups are the way to go.
3. Most people feel fine until a kidney injury is in its late stages; they can have only 15% of their kidney functioning and still feel healthy, not realizing they are suffering from Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). If left unchecked, AKI can have severe untreatable complications.
4. Lack of awareness and restricted access to healthcare has led to hesitancy in people when it comes to taking the vaccine. It falls to the authorities to make sure the people get the vaccine and the specific treatments they need to avoid any complications or morbidity.
5. It’s even more critical for obese, diabetic, and senior citizens to get vaccinated because the complications that can develop from COVID-19 is much higher and dangerous in those populations.
