Covid 19: Ola and Uber suspend operations temporarily in lockdown cities

As the government decided to impose lockdown in 75 affected districts in order to contain the novel coronavirus, ride-hailing companies Uber and Ola have decided to limit their services temporarily in these districts under further notice.Uber sent an email to its riders saying, “In compliance with the government guidelines, we are temporarily suspending all Uber services in your city.
This means that Uber rides services will not be available until further notice.”The email added, “We don’t take such measures lightly, and we ask that you please follow the instructions of the public health authorities.”Ola, responding to an inquiry, said, it will encourage citizens to travel for only essential needs.“Ola will continue to encourage citizens to limit travel only for essential emergency needs as per the Government’s directive.
We will enable a minimal network of vehicles to support essential services in cities, wherever applicable, as part of this national effort to reduce the contagion of COVID-19” it said.
The app is functional, but there are hardly any rides available in the lockdown cities.The death toll due to Covid 19 has reached seven on Sunday with the number of affected cases nearing 400.
