Cowdenin nelihenkinen perhe lähti viettämään Labor Day-viikonloppua heille entuudestaan tutulle retkeilyalueelle vuonna 1974. Perheen äidin, Belindan, oma äiti alkoi ihmetellä kun perhe ei ilmestynyt hänen luokse illalliselle retken päätteeksi, kuten oli sovittu. Seitsemän kuukautta perheen katoamisen jälkeen mysteeri ratkesi osittain.
