The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed much of the Manchester United football team when the aircraft crashed during takeoff. Investigations later confirmed that runway slush, rather than wing ice, was the primary cause, and Captain James Thain spent years defending his actions.
Decades later, TACA Flight 110 suffered a dual engine failure after flying through a severe thunderstorm near New Orleans.
