Creating a Role-Playing Encounter

Every great role playing game is built around a campaign. This is the interactive story which takes your characters from the beginning to the end of the adventure. Campaigns include within them many smaller stories which act like milestones for a character's progress. These stories are known as sessions and often take place over a single evening of play. These sessions in turn are made of encounters which are interactive events that alter the outcome of the session.

 

I'm Antonio and these are my fellow Game Masters Aaron and Charlie. Together we'll discuss building an encounter from the ground up.

Here are the questions we tackle:

1: RPGs are known for there fighting so what technical and thematically considerations go into building a combat?

 

2: When building an encounter the scenery can play a pivotal role. How have you used the environment to add a new dynamic to the encounter?

 

3: Not all encounters involve combat. How do you run a non combat encounter?

 

4: Encounters do not always go as planned. What do you do when role-playing turns to combat unexpectedly?

 

5: What are some of your favorite settings or locations to describe in full detail? Could you describe it to us?
