Switching on Electrified Skills

Creating a Sustainable Talent Pipeline with Dr. Avril Thomson

Listen Later

In today's episode of the Switching on Electrified Skills Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Avril Thomson, an engineer and advocate for diversity in the electrification and manufacturing industry.

In the early 90s, Avril was the only female engineer on a busy construction site, where she became a leading figure and excelled despite gender stereotypes. We discuss her career path and significant moments that shaped her choices.

Throughout our conversation, Avril highlighted the benefits of developing a diverse talent pool in electrification. Avril brought to life the impact of role models, mentors, and support networks on underrepresented groups' path to careers in electrification.

Skills required in the electrification sector constantly evolve as the world strives to develop innovative technologies to support sustainability goals. However, Avril illustrated how skills such as communication and teamwork should be noticed as they also support the creation of a successful contemporary engineer.

When considering skill development, Avril shares why more flexibility, accessibility and inclusivity are needed in education, specifically to work with people's lifestyles at different stages of their life journeys.
