Listen Later

HEADS UP: Topics discussed in this episode include near-death experiences (NDE), drug abuse, grief and loss.

In this sixth part in the series, “Creativity Born of Trauma,” you’ll meet Pat Lewis. Pat has been a career artist in the imagination realm of Science Fiction and Fantasy illustration. Her work has appeared on the covers of books by authors like Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Ursula LeGuin, and Anne McCaffrey to name just a few. Pat has also contributed her designs for Trading Cards such as “Magic the Gathering,” “Wheel of Time” and “Lord of the Rings,” and her work has been featured in many magazines including Amazing Stories. She has worked on Projects for the Smithsonian Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Connecticut Science Centers.

She has also been a cherished friend of mine for over 35 years.

About 10 years ago, Pat became seriously ill and was placed in a medically-induced coma for two weeks. During that time, Pat found herself in what she calls a “dream state,” where she experienced a profoundly beautiful and spiritually meaningful environment. Please join me as she unfolds this fascinating story of near-death experience and how it has changed her art work.

Pat’s parting thought was a quote from the Tom Waits song, “Come on Up to the House.” The lyric is sung as, “The world is not my home; I’m just passing through.”

Cool Gray’s parting thought was a poem by Liz Newman. Her new book, “I Look to the Mourning Sky,” can be purchased here.
