Cree girls against the world (with Sheila North)

Listen Later

Maïtée is in the host chair today to welcome Sheila North for a wide-ranging discussion on Cree sovereignty, building solidarity across First Nations, and Native women reclaiming our rightful place as matriarchs.

Sheila North — also known as Wikahsko Iskwew (Sweetgrass Woman) — hails from Bunibonibee Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba and has worn a whole lotta hats. She's a former journalist, the former Grand Chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, a past candidate for National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, and a longtime activist for MMIW2S.

These days Sheila is serving as the Executive Director of Indigenous engagement at the University of Winnipeg, and has recently authored a memoir called My Privilege, My Responsibility.

* finally as a small side production note: according to Facebook the day that this episode goes live also happens to be Sheila North's birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHEILA!!!
