As another school year is underway, for the first time in district history Volusia County Schools is A rated in back-to-back years.

In this episode of Crest of the Wave, we talk with Volusia County Schools Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin. The discussion will include the impact of having an A rated school district and what factors are measured to determine that rating. We’ll also talk about what’s on the horizon for Volusia County Schools as it continues to offer new career pathways for students, an important workforce development component for the local business community.

During the month of April each year, Jeep enthusiasts from around the world descend upon the Daytona Beach region. They participate in activities throughout the area, from a beach parade to an obstacle course built at Daytona International Speedway and much more, all as part of Jeep Beach

In October 2025, Kristin Weiss joined the Daytona Regional Chamber as incoming President & CEO. She worked alongside her predecessor, Nancy Keefer, for a couple of months getting to know the organization and community. On January 1, she officially took the leadership reins.

In July of this year, Dr. Albert Mosley was inaugurated as the 8th President of Bethune-Cookman University. We sat down with Dr. Mosley recently to learn more about his journey to the helm of the institution founded by Daytona Beach’s own Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. He discussed the gravity of the position and the historical significance of the University. We also talk about the current state of affairs at B-CU as well as what’s on the horizon, including some digital and programmatic innovations that will help carry the long-standing institution into the future.

The state of Florida recently became the 15th largest economy in the world, if it were a nation of its own, with a gross domestic product exceeding $1.7 trillion. That’s not just happening by chance. The Florida Chamber Foundation has set a long-term goal of making Florida a top 10 global economy by 2030. Florida has surpassed Spain and stands just $25.5 billion behind Australia.

Recently, Florida Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Mark Wilson visited the Daytona Beach region, and he stopped in to discuss the growing Florida economy, what’s needed to continue that growth, as well as hot topics expected to be a prominent part of the upcoming legislative session.

Downtown Daytona Beach is home to Jackie Robinson Memorial Ballpark. A setting rich in baseball and civil rights history as the exact location at which Jackie Robinson broke professional baseball’s color barrier in March of 1946. Home to the Daytona Tortugas for the last decade, baseball has been played on City Island for more than a century.

In the last episode of Crest of the Wave, we learned about Readers to Leaders, a partnership of the Daytona Regional Chamber, Leadership Daytona Alumni Council, Early Learning Coalition of Flagler Volusia, and Volusia County Schools. It’s an initiative that emerged from a Leadership Daytona class challenge to boost youth literacy in the region and support the success of our youngest learners. 

In part two of this two-part series, we’ll learn more about the impact the initiative is having on student success and how local community and business leaders can get involved. Allison Miller from the Early Learning Coalition and Kristy Castellanos of Volusia County Schools will share insights on the positive effects Readers to Leaders is already having on student achievement.

In spring of 2023, then-chair of the Daytona Regional Chamber, Nellie Lupoli of ICI Homes, was contemplating what challenge she would issue to the Leadership Daytona class later that summer. Reviewing data from the Florida Chamber’s “Florida Scorecard”, she discovered that only 50% of 3rd graders in Volusia County were reading on or above grade level, and she knew instantly this presented an opportunity. 

In part one of a two-part series of Crest of the Wave, we’ll talk with two members of Leadership Daytona Class 43 which responded to Lupoli’s challenge…Dr. Michelle Goldys from Daytona State College and Devin Miller from Brown & Brown Insurance. They’ll tell us what they learned researching their class response, and how it has evolved into a new initiative supporting youth literacy in the region, Readers to Leaders.
