Critias by Plato

Listen Later

Plato's Critias—an incomplete late dialogue featuring the famous story of Atlantis, the legendary civilization beyond the Pillars of Hercules. Translated by Benjamin Jowett, narrated by Kevin Johnson with full subtitles.

📖 About the Work

Critias is an incomplete dialogue from the late period of Plato's life, most likely written after The Republic. It contains the famous and detailed account of Atlantis, a powerful maritime civilization that allegedly existed 9,000 years before Plato's time. Through the character Critias (a historical figure who was one of the Thirty Tyrants of Athens and Plato's uncle), Plato describes Atlantis's geography, government, architecture, and eventual downfall—told with such skill that many throughout history have believed it to be true. The dialogue explores themes of ideal societies, divine judgment, and the corruption of civilizations.

✍️ About Plato

Plato (c. 428–347 BCE) was a Greek philosopher and student of Socrates whose dialogues laid the foundations of Western philosophy. His works explore ethics, politics, metaphysics, and epistemology. Critias belongs to his late period and connects with other dialogues including Timaeus, forming part of a planned trilogy that was never completed.

🎙️ Narration & Translation

Kevin Johnson brings engaging narration to Benjamin Jowett's classic translation, with full on-screen subtitles and no background music—perfect for those fascinated by the Atlantis legend, students of ancient philosophy, and anyone interested in utopian civilizations and mythical histories.
