Nebraska FARMcast - Farm and Ranch Management

Cropping Practices for Carbon Sequestration in Nebraska with Larry Van Tassell

Listen Later

The Growing Climate Solutions Act recently passed the Senate and, if enacted, would pave the way for farmers and ranchers to more easily participate in voluntary environmental credit markets, such as land or soil carbon sequestration. Some agricultural practices that can typically earn credits in these markets include cover crops and no-till and reduced tillage practices.

Dr. Larry Van Tassell discusses how these three practices — planting cover crops, no-till and reduced tillage — have been used in Nebraska, and how well producers in the state may be positioned to enter carbon markets.

Dr. Van Tassell is a professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also serves as director of UNL's Center for Agricultural Profitability.
