Jack Taylor brings death and pain to everyone he loves. His only hope of redemption - his surrogate son, Cody - is lying in hospital in a coma. At least he still has Ridge, his old friend from the Guards, though theirs is an unorthodox relationship. When she tells him that a boy has been crucified in Galway city, he agrees to help her search for the killer.
Jack's investigations take him to many of his old haunts, where he encounters ghosts, dead and living. Everyone wants something from him, but Jack is not sure he has anything left to give. Maybe he should sell up, pocket his euros, and get the hell out of Galway, like everyone else seems to be doing.
Then the sister of the murdered boy is burned to death, and Jack decides he must hunt down the killer, if only to administer his own brand of rough justice.

Ken Bruen pulled through again with his Cross novel. I enjoy the visceral experience of his 1st person telling but I think he indulges sometimes in too much darkness. That doesn't mean I won't continue buying or renting the Jack Taylor series though. I really enjoy this character he has built . . .
Definitely preferable to television, film and any other form of popular culture.
I also have to congratulate Bruen on his lack of concern from grammatical and sentence etiquette at times. I love a writer who can take risks and take on the system.
A dark, but riveting tale
I stumbled across this book on Amazon and received it as a Christmas gift. I hadnât read any of the Jack Taylor Series before and found it an enjoyable read, giving me a glimpse into the darker side of Irish character. I guess it didnât surprise me an awful lot because Iâve read a lot about the Great Famine and the horrors the Irish have endured for centuries. Itâs a testament to the Irish character that theyâve managed to survive and keep their language and culture intact.
Jackâs inner demons come back to haunt him at every turn, as he investigates the crucifixion of a young man in Galway City. His hard outer core masks a man in torment. The story is touching, thought provoking and at times depressing, but well worth the read.

Jack Taylor and more misery
I feel quite sorry for Jack Taylor. Tragedy seems to follow him like one of those cartoon rain clouds that only stay over one person and continue to pour on them. Jack just can't seem to catch a break in his life. Every time he turns around, it seems, someone he knows is either seriously injured or killed.
This latest book by one of my favorite authors follows Jack on another of his journeys to Calvary. His "son" dies from an assassin's bullet which may have come from the gun of an old friend, and another former Guard who begins to work for Jack is found dead in the river.
There is a crucifixion, a horrific burning death, and Jack now musr wear a hearing aid! Jusr another example of growing old. In addition, Jack's female friend Ridge is waiting word on whether or not a lump she found is malignant.
