A SCIENCE NOTE

When you hear crows and blue jays screeching and diving in the air, it usually means they are mobbing a predator. Both species are highly territorial and will aggressively defend their space from threats such as hawks, owls, eagles, or even ground predators like foxes or cats.

Blue jays and crows are known for their intelligence and strong alarm calls, often alerting other birds and animals to danger. If they are making a lot of noise and swooping down repeatedly, there’s a good chance a predator is nearby—sometimes even a snake or raccoon in a tree.

If you observe this behavior, look around, and you may spot the intruder they’re trying to drive away!
