Publisher's Summary:
When a sailor dies under unusual circumstances, Raiford goes undercover on the high seas.
The Rossi family received only a handful of letters after their son shipped out on the supertanker Aurora Victorious. The first dispatches were from Harold himself, describing the blend of tedium and excitement that defined life onboard the ship. The last communication came from the ship's owners: four brief sentences informing them that their son had died and been buried at sea.
Desperate to know more, the Rossis turn to James and Julie Raiford, the father-daughter detective team behind the Touchstone Agency. As the Raifords soon learn, work on the open sea is dangerous--and asking questions can be deadly. When the shipping company stonewalls the investigation, James joins the Aurora Victorious as an electronics officer, and Julie digs into the proprietors' shadowy background. International oil shipping is a ruthless business, and its secrets run as deep as the ocean itself.
Members Reviews:
the writing pretty straight forward and workmanlike
The Raifords return in this second book in the Rex Burns series about a father-daughter private detective firm that started with "Body Slam." While I do appreciate the unusual setting, a very large tanker, it also means rather long passages where nothing much is going on and the duo is actually working apart. The mystery is so-so, the writing pretty straight forward and workmanlike, dialogue is realistic. My biggest complaint has more to do with the main characters, who are somewhat lacklustre for private detectives. Perhaps they will become more developed in future volumes, which I do intend to read as they become available.
Eight Bells?
Rex Burns is a master storyteller. I read Crude Carrier in two days because I wanted to learn how the Touchstone Detective Agency was going to solve the mystery of a missing tanker, a death at sea, stolen oil money and how - or if - an older and talented Detective Raiford would escape death on an aging Super Tanker. I was well entertained and will read other books by Burns. I especially liked his knowledge of life and operational dangers on an oil carrier out of the Arabian Gulf. I spent time on the Gulf and could easily visualize the transit of the ship through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Arabian Sea. The action comes fast. Enjoy the read.
Burns, a Master of Nautical Struggles at His Best
Rex Burns's newest mystery has everything: an informed, well written story, with credible suspense and a slam bang finish, accurate characterizations, lyrical descriptions of life on the water. His knowledge of the crude oil shipping business is impressive, he understands the sea and its ways, and as a former Marine he's among the best when it comes to describing man-to-man rough and tumble battles. It's impossible to read this book and not become engrossed in the struggle to solve a probable murder and escape alive before the corrupt ship's captain and his cohorts kill even more as they skim and steal valuable oil from their cargo.
A gripper
This is a grab-you story. Could not wait to read the next page. Exciting and smart.
High Seas Investigation
I enjoyed this since I'm a sucker for any story set on the water. And I've always had an interest in those behemoths of the sea, the VLCC (Very Large Crude Carriers).
