Crunch Time: National Potato Chip Day Celebrates Salty Snack's Crispy History

Listen Later

On March 14th, we celebrate the quirky and delicious holiday known as National Potato Chip Day! This crunchy celebration honors one of America's favorite snacks, the humble potato chip.

The origin of the potato chip can be traced back to 1853 in Saratoga Springs, New York. According to legend, a disgruntled customer at Moon's Lake House repeatedly sent back his fried potatoes, complaining that they were too thick and soggy. The chef, George Crum, decided to teach the customer a lesson by slicing the potatoes extremely thin, frying them to a crisp, and seasoning them with extra salt. To Crum's surprise, the customer loved the crispy creation, and the potato chip was born!

Today, potato chips come in a wide variety of flavors, from classic salted to exotic options like wasabi, dill pickle, and even chocolate-covered. They are enjoyed as a side dish, snack, or even as a crunchy topping for sandwiches and casseroles.

To celebrate National Potato Chip Day, why not host a potato chip tasting party? Gather a variety of unique flavors and brands, and invite friends and family to sample and rate their favorites. You could even challenge yourself to create a new potato chip flavor combination or incorporate potato chips into a fun, themed recipe like potato chip-crusted fried chicken or potato chip chocolate chip cookies!

So, let's raise a bag of chips to George Crum and his serendipitous invention. Happy National Potato Chip Day, everyone! May your day be filled with crunchy, salty goodness and the joy of celebrating one of America's most beloved snacks.
