The Liber Pontificalis says that he was the son of a Greek Jew of Bethlehem, and, certainly incorrectly, that he divided Rome into several "titles" or Parishes, assigning a priest to each, and appointed seven deacons for the city. as is common among first popes. They did not rule over Rome as we would like to believe. They were in hiding or working one on one with other new Christians and their communiques were not saved. We can piece together several things to get a look at the Church’s early life. Evaristus being a Jew shows that, at that time, the Christians were still seen as a sect of Judaism, even a whole generation after the death of Peter and Paul.
