In 1980s North America, cults and religious sects like the Hari Krishnas, Scientology and the Moonies had become the greatest fear of many parents. With more and more young people flocking to such groups and cutting their families out of their lives, "deprogrammers" moved onto the scene as psychologists and anthropologists tried to explain the phenomenon.
