Cultivating is where we go out and break up that fallow grown, we condition and prepare the soil for planting. It requires quite a bit of work and due diligence to get the soil reading for planting. When ready we then plant, and care and nurture our crop through out the growth season until harvest time. This is similar to when man receive God's word in his heart.  Man receive the Word and God's Holy Spirit waters and care-nurture him to maturity. But there can be some issue alone the way and I like to refer to Jesus' parable found in Matthew 13:24-30 "Another parable put he forth unto them saying the kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man who sowed good seed in his field but while men slept his enemy came and sowed tares among the seed and went his way, but when the blade was sprung up and brought forth fruit then appeared to tares also, so the servants of the householder came and said unto him sir didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? From whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, an enemy hath done this. The servant said unto him, wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said Nay; lest while you gather up the tares you root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers Gather ye together first the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn." You see Satan is that enemy who comes in a sow the tares to derail man from Gods plan of salvation when you get some time read the whole chapter of how the Lord explain this parable in detail it is quite fascinating.
